Melbourne GPO
MELBOURNE
2004
The redevelopment of Melbourne’s iconic GPO declared a new era for the building’s use and further provided an outstanding architectural result, displaying great clarity in the relationship to the existing built fabric from 1867.
The project was based around a specialist retail and commercial conversion involving the full adaptation and integration of the main heritage registered building, and the inclusion of carefully crafted additional built elements. Combined in the response to one of Australia’s most prominent buildings was the revisalisation of significant public spaces in the heart of Melbourne and a return to the city of one of its great symbols.
