Gowrie Redevelopment
CARLTON NORTH
2012
This project takes on the redevelopment of Lady Gowrie’s original Melbourne site which came into existence in North Carlton in the 1930s. The North Carlton site enjoys a convenient and quality inner city location on Canning street, directly adjacent to Curtain Square, which is a landscape garden park. The site is approximately 5300m2, 60% of which is dedicated to open space.
The existing centre has set the benchmark for childcare in Australia, and has offshoots in other states. The original 1930s building was destroyed by fire in 1960s and a replacement building was established, following the fire, that is still in use today.
The activities in the new facility will continue the childcare function and accommodate the increased provision of education and training facilities for childcare personnel within a landscaped garden setting of identical size to the current arrangement.
